Workhorse Islands: Islands in the kitchen are no longer an island unto themselves. Islands are becoming more multipurpose to accommodate a wide range of activities in the kitchen. Gone are the days of one person working away quietly tucked into the kitchens. Designers are becoming more aware of the mixed use activities in kitchens. Children do schoolwork, people work together to make meals, guests socialize and adults like to wind down with a glass of wine and a good book, just to name a few things that happen in kitchens these days. More Natural Materials: Expect to see more wood in everything - drawers, countertops, floors and cabinets. Stone has also become popular. Slab backsplashes are becoming a thing. People are loving the durability and cost effectiveness of natural materials, as they think long term about staying in their houses and reducing the need for maintenance in their busy lives.
