What You Need To Know Before Remodeling Your Bathroom

The process is no different when you decide to remodel your bathroom. Before you jump into a renovation, and before you hire a professional contractor, ask yourself the following questions.

1. What Is Your Bathroom Remodel Budget?

The first question any homeowner needs to answer in a bathroom renovation is the size of budget you will have available. By creating a budget and sticking to it you will avoid many of the headaches and pitfalls that can occur. Knowing what to expect for your particular project is crucial. For example, the typical master bath remodel runs approximately $16,000. When you have a set budget it will keep your contractor reined in, and you on an even keel. Make sure you have allowed yourself a little wiggle room.

2. What Do I Want And What Do I Need?

You will need a toilet, sink, lighting, and a tub or shower, at the minimum. The question becomes whether you have the space and budget for the things you want. Whether you are overhauling your master bath or updating a guest bathroom, you’ll soon find that much of your struggle will be deciding which amenities are on your wish list.

Depending on the location and purpose of the bathroom, you may need to consider additional cabinet space, a separate bathtub, and shower, or a private section for the toilet. The style, design, and quality of materials are also something you’ll need to spend some time on. If your budget is tight, you may be better off choosing a different countertop to offset the added expense of a walk-in shower, or keeping the same layout rather than drastically changing the floor plan.

3. Who Will be Using the Bathroom?

Different bathrooms often have different functions. For example, a half-bath off of a mudroom may require different flooring materials, and won’t need many luxuries. Your master bath, on the other hand, is more likely to incorporate amenities such as designer showerheads, a soaking tub, and his and hers sinks. If you spend a lot of time in the bathroom, it might make sense to pay extra to have a TV or internet system installed, which wouldn’t be appropriate for a guest bathroom. A bathroom frequently used by children and other family members may need an upgraded ventilation system.

4. What About Energy Efficient Products?

Eco-friendly products, such as low-flow toilets and energy-efficient faucets and showers are good for the environment and, in the long run, your budget. According to the EPA, for everyone out of ten homes that upgrade their bathroom with energy efficiency in mind, it would result in a savings of 70 billion gallons of water as well as reduced energy costs of $2.5 billion dollars. While environmentally friendly materials and appliances may cost more at the outset, the amount of money they can shave off your energy will pay off in the long run. You can also save money and go green by recycling your existing cabinets rather than throwing them out.
